North Carolina state of mind

linville-valley-fog1

There are few places on the east coast that offer more than 10 miles of continuous class V, mind blowing views, and no vehicle access. The Linville gorge is one. Over the last year i took some great pics of this special place and i thought I’d share.

There are so many good runs in North Carolina and Tennessee, but its hard to find so much awesomeness in one place.

Late China Update

This Winter a group five British kayakers travelled out to the Sichuan Province of China to explore some endangered rivers. We met up with Travis Winn an american kayaker that lives and works in China.

The team struggled through paperwork, customs, beauraucracy, mad and bad roads, vehicular and almost nervous breakdowns to hit the untouched whitewater of the Litang. This first descent proved to be a gem, full of read and run through forest lined banks and mountainous backdrops. Until we hit the dams where the character changed dramatically to a bigger volume, harder, and more dangerous run. Here are some pics:

A swift turnover and we were on the second descent of the Yalong.

The Yangste was our third river and the main aim of the trip. This was last done in 1986 with varying levels of success by two teams, a Chinese and a sino-american team, there’ll be more on this in a film that will be around later this year

Varun + Grand Canyon = Great Time

Hey, I just returned from a 21 day raft supported trip down the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. I was able to take the new Varun down, this was my first time getting to know this boat and I must say we became pretty good friends.

GOPR0395

The Varun had enough hull speed that I was able to keep up with everyone else on the trip but I didn’t sacrifice any of my playboating ability.  This boat did it all fast on the flats, smooth in the rapids, responsive on a wave, and threw down in a hole.  Here is a video fresh from the Canyon enjoy.

Sunrise at the Bitches

Its a hard job but someone has to do it!

With the excellent tides and opportunity for a film crew and speed boat, obviously we jumped at the chance of a Pyranha and P&H photoshoot at the famous Bitches tiderace in Pembrokeshire.

Setting out just before sunrise meant we got to see this awesome sight, and arrived at the race as it was building, giving us plenty of time to set up the equipment and get everyone used to the features.

With a full range of brand new play boats from Pyranha and P&H (yes play boats designed specifically for the sea) we were armed with enough toys to really get the most out of the day.

Yes that is the very first Carbon Molan, paddled by Bren Orton.

44th Red Moshannon down river race

So this weekend was the 44th annual Red Mo down river race. A grass roots race with the most diverse group of paddlers to be found anywhere. Well or at least in Grassflats PA on this 28 degree day. So with the classes ranging from short canoes, to wildwater boats if you paddle you can find a class you will fit just about anything thing that floats. Tussy Mt outfitters has been the host to this event and a great promoter of down river racing. Tussy Mt outfitters should get credit for getting a bunch of river bums to the river, on the river in good time, and show you a good time at the end. If you have not been to this event yet check your calender for next spring.

See you on the water! O and I got 1st K1 long in the fastest plastic kayak on the market the Pyranha Speeder

Busy California

The title rings true in so many ways.  But lately, “in a boating way” – even more so.  Cali goes hand in hand with SUNSHINE and GRANITE.  But given that some end-of-the-world storms have been blasting us this winter, it is now RAIN and BASALT.  So staying indoors, breaking out the maps and exploring some new low elevation runs, is the name of the game. (and by low I mean low as in 200′ above sea level).  So here is video and here for more words and pictures. The sun finally broke out yesterday, yeah.

Taugl River Gorge

The Taugl-river is a small creek near Salzburg in Austria.

The river flows through a very deep, 8 kilometer long Gorge. There is only one Brige in the middle where you can have a look on the river.

The best thing about this river is, that you can have totally new rapids after every flood . So its always very challenging not to know whats araoun the next corner …. On those 8 kilometers there is only one way to exit.. the rest are must run sections and big walls on both side.

On the take out there is also a nice 9 Meter drop called “römerfalls”…..

One of thounsands of must runs…. around every corner you have to hope that there are no trees 😀

Portaging is not always possible…. but great fun if you have to !!!!!

Casper…The Friendly Whitewater Park

The winter here in Colorado has been a long one.  So long in fact that lately I have spent the countless hours watching kayaking videos and splashing cold water in my face.  October 28th 2010 marked the last time my ass touched the seat of my Pyranha Molan…until this weekend!

After hearing from my friend Leif Anderson that the whitewater park in Casper, Wyoming was in, I dropped everything headed up to meet him in Fort Collins.  Leif, his fiancee Natalie and I rallied through a savage snow storm on a four and a half hour drive north to Casper for a weekend of freezing cold play-boating.

I want to give a huge shout out to the Schmitt family for hooking up a place to crash, T-roy for letting me borrow his M Molan, John Quartana for the Go-Pro and Leif and Natalie for these photos, hope you enjoy them…edit coming soon!
