Biography

I started paddling at a young age in the front of a tandem canoe (with my dad in the stern) on class II streams in my home state of Virginia, USA. I always loved being on the river and that interest was further solidified by attending a summer camp program that taught whitewater canoeing and specifically focused on multi-day canoe tripping. The highlight of each summer for me was when we would spend 5-day and 4-nights paddling down the James River and camping along the way. In high school I started to be able to paddle more often as my friends and I were able to drive ourselves to the river and my focus turned more towards wanting to progress at whitewater paddling. In pursuit of that goal I eventually switched to a kayak in 2000 while in college at Radford University where I majored in Outdoor Recreation. Kayaking quickly became my driving passion and I have been paddling around 150 days a year ever since. I am currently the director of an outdoor experiential education center on Lookout Mountain in the northeast corner of Alabama. The location provides excellent local paddling for much of the year and the job schedule allows time for trips elsewhere in the winter and summer. I have been paddling for Pyranha since 2006 and Immersion Research since 2008.

From the Archive: Volume I

A couple years ago, on the Team Pyranha blog, Ryan Scott posed a retrospective of pictures of himself paddling various Pyranha boats through the years (see his post here). At the time I remember thinking that it would be a fun project to look back through some of my older padding photos and try to …

Late China Update

This Winter a group five British kayakers travelled out to the Sichuan Province of China to explore some endangered rivers. We met up with Travis Winn an american kayaker that lives and works in China. The team struggled through paperwork, customs, beauraucracy, mad and bad roads, vehicular and almost nervous breakdowns to hit the untouched …

Winter Weather Advisory

Typically December is great month to be a kayaker in Alabama. Frequent rainfall and mild temperatures usually result in lots of river days without much discomfort. However, December 2010 started out with a deep freeze that swept mercilessly across the southeastern United States. Alabama is typically around five to ten degrees warmer than the rest …

Alabama Awakening: Fall 2010

The fall of 2010 has been especially dry in the southeastern United States, leaving boaters to rely on dam release runs we waiting for the rains to return. For north Alabama, the fall of 2010 has been the exact opposite of the fall of 2009. In 2009 the rains came back in force in mid …

2010 Burn Review

Review by Adam Goshorn Action Photos by John Kern Having entered the sport after the introduction of edges and flatter hulls, the majority of the boats that I have owned have had simi-planing hulls, including most of the creekers. Perhaps it is because of my introduction to planing hulls early in my paddling progression or …

Extra… Extra… (a.k.a. Winter B-Roll)

I’ve got a couple new videos in the works, but in the course of making them there was some pretty good footage left over that I didn’t use.  I hated to not use some of it, so I put together this little video with all the extra stuff.  Its just compiled from some filming this …

Spring sprung and it’s now deep into another hot summer here in the southeastern United States. I was a great winter/spring of paddling, but as usually my photo and video updates are running about 6 months behind, so lets back up for second. In early December I spend a couple great weeks in …

A December to Remember Part 2: From the Grand to Mexico

Owen-Lucas-by-Jon-Miller-2 We awoke before dawn, packed up camp in the dark, and put on the river in the first few minutes of daylight.  It was our final day on the Grand Canyon and the short float to the take-out went smoothly, but the rest of the day was a harsh baptism back into the outside …

A December to Remember. Part 1: The Grand Canyon

The final month of 2009 certainly turned out to be one worth remembering.  Departing Mentone Alabama December 1st the thirty-three days that followed were full of good friends and good times on and off the river.  The first leg of the journey began with three of us making the long drive to Flagstaff Arizona to …
