Biography

I started paddling at a young age in the front of a tandem canoe (with my dad in the stern) on class II streams in my home state of Virginia, USA. I always loved being on the river and that interest was further solidified by attending a summer camp program that taught whitewater canoeing and specifically focused on multi-day canoe tripping. The highlight of each summer for me was when we would spend 5-day and 4-nights paddling down the James River and camping along the way. In high school I started to be able to paddle more often as my friends and I were able to drive ourselves to the river and my focus turned more towards wanting to progress at whitewater paddling. In pursuit of that goal I eventually switched to a kayak in 2000 while in college at Radford University where I majored in Outdoor Recreation. Kayaking quickly became my driving passion and I have been paddling around 150 days a year ever since. I am currently the director of an outdoor experiential education center on Lookout Mountain in the northeast corner of Alabama. The location provides excellent local paddling for much of the year and the job schedule allows time for trips elsewhere in the winter and summer. I have been paddling for Pyranha since 2006 and Immersion Research since 2008.

Fusion Summer: Part II – Utah

All photos by Adam Goshorn unless otherwise noted.   After our four-day, self-supported run of Hells Canyon in Idaho, the second phase of our trip was going to be another self-support run, but this time we would be joined by my brother for a river on the easier end of the spectrum.  My brother had …

Fusion Summer – Part I: Hells Canyon

Below: Adam Goshorn by John Kern Early in the spring I really thought I had my summer plans all figured out.  A friend had won a permit for a June launch on the Middle Fork of the Salmon and I had accepted the invitation to join her for a 5-day, self-supported run.  I planned to …

Pyranha Shiva Review!

Photo below by Shannon MacMichael   When I first heard Robert Peerson was joining the design team at Pyranha I immediately texted a good friend of mine who paddles for Wave Sport to tell him the news.  All he said in reply was… “Shit”.  It is no secret that Robert Peerson is a talented designer …

Alabama Unknown – Part II: Yellow Creek

The day after our exploration of Hurricane Creek there was still plenty of water on Lookout Mountain. Ben Bernhard and I had been talking about making a run on Yellow Creek for quite some time, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. It was not a first descent, we knew that it had been run …

Unknown Alabama – Part I: Hurricane Creek

The winter is always a great time to be a paddler in Alabama and so far, the winter of 2011-2012 has delivered! Saturday morning January 21st, at the end of rainy week, another band of thunderstorms rolled across Lookout Mountain at just the right time. Everything in the area was already primed from the rain …

California 2011 Part III: Clover Creek

After spending five days in the Kern drainage (see previous post), on our sixth day in California we broke camp early and began driving north. It took a bit longer than we expected, but by mid afternoon we met up with another truckload of southeasters in the town of Three Rivers to discuss our next …

California Softcore

In early June I realized that I was going to have time for a little western adventure this summer. Having paddled a good bit in Colorado in the past, California was at the forefront of my mind. California in summer is on every creekboaters wish list and after years of missing out, I finally got …

Grand Canyon Round III: Self-Support in the Fusion

One of the greatest things about the current Grand Canyon permitting system is the “follow-up lotteries that happen throughout the year to fill unclaimed and canceled launch dates. The closer the launch date gets, the less people apply for it and the odds of winning are much higher. The toughest thing about these follow-up lotteries …

Alabama Winter Update

As a longtime fan and occasional contributor of LVM, I was sad to hear it was going to draw to a close. However, all things must end at some point and now that LVM is no longer a business, I see no reason not to put the segments that I have contributed online for all …
