Biography
I started paddling at a young age in the front of a tandem canoe (with my dad in the stern) on class II streams in my home state of Virginia, USA. I always loved being on the river and that interest was further solidified by attending a summer camp program that taught whitewater canoeing and specifically focused on multi-day canoe tripping. The highlight of each summer for me was when we would spend 5-day and 4-nights paddling down the James River and camping along the way. In high school I started to be able to paddle more often as my friends and I were able to drive ourselves to the river and my focus turned more towards wanting to progress at whitewater paddling. In pursuit of that goal I eventually switched to a kayak in 2000 while in college at Radford University where I majored in Outdoor Recreation. Kayaking quickly became my driving passion and I have been paddling around 150 days a year ever since. I am currently the director of an outdoor experiential education center on Lookout Mountain in the northeast corner of Alabama. The location provides excellent local paddling for much of the year and the job schedule allows time for trips elsewhere in the winter and summer. I have been paddling for Pyranha since 2006 and Immersion Research since 2008.
